Awakening our senses and exciting our vision are the attributes of the upcoming exhibit, “Imagine That,” at Les Beaux Arts Gallery in Greenwich. Jeff Moriber’s paintings and prints will be displayed Sunday, May 5, through Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

An award winning graphic designer, Moriber is a fine art artist and printmaker whose paintings and linoleum block print work tell tales of emotions through a crisp cutting technique, saturated inking and a rich pallet. His subjects are boldly painted with a strong sense of chiaroscuro. They push forward and fill up the space creating a strong sense of presence. His portraits are expressive and ambiguous inviting the viewer to make up his own story about the painting.

In his artist statement, Moriber wrote, “You can’t look forward without looking back. I often see before me what is familiar: I also see what is unfamiliar, what I expected and what I hadn’t expected. My personal storehouse of memories encompasses all I’ve experienced and informs me, in my own particular context, what it is I’m seeing. My images depict what I believe is there and unseen, subtle or overt at that particular moment. The content, gestures and colors reflect my feeling and thought about the circumstances and history of that moment. I invite the viewer’s own imagination to join the conversation.”

Moriber is a graduate of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn and was creative director for Hill and Knowlton and Fleishman Hillard in New York. He resides and has his studio in Westchester, NY.

March 1 – June 30, 2013. From Italy to America combines an installation celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Italian American community in Greenwich, Connecticut, with a complementary exhibition of black and white photographs from the show From Italy to America: The Photographs of Anthony Riccio, organized by the Bellarmine Museum of Art, Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut. Notes Town Ambassador Bea Crumbine, who has been actively involved in facilitating the Greenwich exhibition since its inception, “Anthony Riccio grew up in New Haven’s Italian community where he documented a way of life that was fast disappearing. Seeing the incredible faces in his photos made me realize how important it is to recognize the stories of Italian Americans right here in our own community before we lose them.”

From Italy to America also includes historic memorabilia, photos, objects and documents found by the Greenwich Historical Society “discovery team” led by board member Pat Dillon, Bea Crumbine and guest curator Kathie Bennewitz and aided by the St. Lawrence Society, St. Roch’s Parish, the Greenwich Library and its Oral History Project. Residents of Italian heritage from all over town unearthed material for the exhibition from closets, attics, trunks and family coffers and shared recollections of the individuals, institutions, events and traditions that shaped the Italian American community and the town. Over forty residents discussed the Italian American immigrant experience in Greenwich. These interviews were edited into clips, which will be on view in the exhibition and on the Greenwich Historical Society website (www.greenwichhistory.org). The interview segments were produced by TimeStories, a video biography production company founded by Emmy Award-winning creative director Peter Savigny. The exhibition will be complemented by a variety of public programs (to be announced).

Another happy occasion related to From Italy to America is a ceremony that will take place on opening day, March 1, that will designate two towns in southern Italy (Morra De Sanctis in Campania and Rose in Calabria) as sister cities with Greenwich. Many of Greenwich’s Italian American residents emigrated from these two small towns. At the ceremony, First Selectman Peter Tesei will present official documents to the mayors of both towns, who will have traveled to the United States especially for this event.

May 2 – 27, 2013. Art to the Avenue. Tall, new, colorfully painted steel sculptures by nationally renowned sculptor Denis Folz have been installed along Greenwich Avenue inaugurating the Greenwich Arts Council’s annual May celebration of the arts Art to the Avenue. Transforming the downtown business area into a strolling art gallery.

Now in its sixteenth year, the celebration is one of the largest ever mounted and includes 140 artists displaying their art work at over 120 different locations. The goal of the project is to “match” artists with shops, restaurants and retailers who select their art to be shown. All art work is for sale benefitting both the artists and the Council, while bringing thousands of additional visitors to the downtown Greenwich area. A complete Map/Guide to the event is published and extensively distributed, listing all the locations and their participating artists.

The Opening Night Festivities for Art to the Avenue will take place on Thursday evening, May 2, from 5:30 to 8:00pm. Thanks to the generous support of many area musicians, bands, singers, dancers and other performers Greenwich Avenue becomes alive with entertainment. Many locations showing art will also be hosting special free receptions for the artists and the public, encouraging visitors to meet the artists and join in the fun, convivial atmosphere.

May 23 – June 20, 2013. Exhibit: Reclaimed Perspective: Paintings, Furniture, Musical Pairings by Joseph Dermody. Greenwich artist Joseph Dermody finds living in coastal New England to be a constant inspiration for his work. Drawing upon local natural elements he reconstructs the physical world into abstract paintings or functional sculpture. As Dermody states, “I make new art from old recycled materials. What was once part of a computer, or floating in the ocean, becomes part of a coffee table or a piece of wall art.”

The artist is constantly recycling his ideas as well. What may not work for him in one medium may well come to life in another. Dermody is also a professional musician fluent with many instruments, and this musical background inspires everything that he creates. This dimension is especially apparent in his paintings. These are dream-like meditations which allude to sea, sky and horizon across impressionistically colored surfaces. Most of the paintings in the exhibition are, in fact, “paired” with musical compositions some by Dermody himself. Labels are configured with bar codes which the viewer may swipe with a smart phone and listen to a brief musical passage that correlates to the canvases thereby giving them a unique multi-sensory depth

Opening Reception on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. A Conversation With The Artist at 6:45 P.M.
